Still on

1 week with clip in shoes and I have not fallen off. That said, my forest ride was not completed as the bolt holding my seat on bust as I was about a forth of the way through the ride. Luckily I did not fall off or onto the rear wheel like a mate did a few months back (those grazes apparently went all the way up to the nether regions).

But riding 6km home without a seat is a bit tough on the legs. Hopefully tomorrows ride will be more successful.

Slow start

Time to set up my first pair of cleat shoes.

Step 1 – Uncovering the mounting brackets. Now with these shoes this was not that easy. Once you worked out where you actually needed to cut first, then it was reasonably easy.

Step 2 – Mounting the cleats. They go on easy, but are they in the right place? Not sure yet. They are reasonably well located under the ball of my foot (or at least the bit I call the ball of my foot). Not too sure I have them angled quite right yet. Do them up tight.

Step 3 – Wind off the peddle mechanism to loose – done!

Step 4 – Take off the old peddles – Man they were tight, but got there. And yes I did know what direction to turn them.

Step 5 – Put on new peddles – Easy as.

Step 6 – Clip in and ride – Simple enough. Messed around in the back yard and decided to crank up the tightness a tad (one full turn). Then a small ride to the supermarket with Brook. Hey they feel alright, and I can clip out alright.

So I am pleased to have stepped up to clip less peddles. Seems a funny name for them as you clip in to them. SPDs vs anything else? Who knows, they came with the bike so that is what I am going to use. Taking a bit to get use to clipping in – my right foot seems to be the worst. Riding with them not clipped in is rather loose, so that will be interesting on my first real ride. I am 100% sure I will come up to something and not clip out and fall onto my side. I just hope it is not at an intersection during rush hour traffic. Don’t think I will tighten them up for a couple of weeks yet.

New Shoes

Have just got my first pair of cycle shoes. So this weekend I’ll be putting gearing up the shoes and bike. Ready for falling off the first time I need to unclip!

Art site updated

Check out the new look of Joss’s Art website. Have just finished putting it into textpattern. Not bad if I do say so myself.

Wheel-a-thon

Brook’s Kindy had a wheel-a-thon today. Heaps of kids, bikes, and a small track! Actually there was surprising few crashes which was good. Brook did well and really enjoyed himself.

Jumping Chain

Not happy on my ride today. I replaced my chain thinking I was doing some preventative maintenance – replace every 6 months type thing to make the most of the rear cluster (cogs, free-wheel, chainset or what ever other name people seem to call them). But not 5min into my ride and my chain started jumping. And it did not really matter what gear I was in.

So I was hoping for a $30 job but it looks like it is going to cost a lot more now. Not too happy about it, as the bike is only 6 months old – but that is not a case of poor quality of the bike, it is more the amount of riding and the condition. I ride in the forest by the beach – lots of sand! whilst I clean it after every ride, there is only so much you can do. Joys of that track. Just annoyed that I did not replace it sooner – I said I would do it before 2000km and have done 2500km.

Not too sure if I will take it in to get done, or buy the parts and tools and do it myself. $$ will be the deciding factor. Problem is my favourite parts shop does not sell the cheaper parts – hey with all the sand why bother with the expensive ones? It came with Shimano Deore (11-32 9 speed) and that shifts fine, so no point putting in the $ for something better that is just going to be eaten up as quickly.

Mothers Day

Hi. Well this is a first – me writing something for the website. Well today is Mothers Day and I woke up to bacon and eggs for breakfast. Yum. I was also given a lovely card from Cam and Brook and a book called Cloud Farm that I had been keen on reading for ages. And last week at kindy Brook had made me another lovely Mothers Day card. So its been a great day so far.

Cam is currently out on a bike ride – despite the freezing weather. And yesterday I played my first outdoor netball game for the season. Our team did quite well but we did lose. However I played a second game straight after for my coaches team and we won that. Needless to say I am feeling rather stiff and sore today! As well as feeing generally sore all over I am suffering a sprained finger and ankle and a few scratches! It can be a very vicious game….

Not too much other news. Brook has learnt to write his name which is very exciting. Now nearly everything in the house is labelled with his name though! Including all the windows, the fridge, the table, his toy boxes and endless bits of paper etc etc.

Better go, Love Joss.
